Burundi Star Coffee
About
Burundi Star Coffee is a woman-owned, immigrant-owned café located at 261 St. John Street in Portland, Maine, founded by Jocelyne Kamikazi — the daughter of a Burundian coffee farmer and the U.S. representative of the International Women’s Coffee Alliance (IWCA) to Burundi — who moved to Maine with her husband Andre as asylum seekers in 2006. The shop sources all of its specialty coffee directly from women farmers in the Mwaro, Ngozi, Kayanza, and Kirimiro regions of Burundi, offering sustainably farmed beans alongside a menu of Burundian-inspired savory and sweet dishes, pastries from local bakeries, smoothies, and teas. Through its direct trade model, Burundi Star Coffee is deeply committed to supporting Burundian farming communities and celebrating East African culture in the heart of Portland.
