Founded in 1994 by co-founders Mary Allen Lindemann and Alan Spear, Coffee By Design is a Portland, Maine-based specialty coffee roaster and coffeehouse with multiple locations, including its flagship roastery on Diamond Street. The company sources beans from farms around the world, roasting every batch to order, and has built a strong reputation among the region’s top chefs — with its coffee served at several James Beard Award–winning restaurants. Deeply committed to community, Coffee By Design actively supports local artists, nonprofits, and the integration of refugees and asylum seekers, and has been recognized both locally and internationally as a model for inclusive, community-centered coffee culture.
