Founded in 2020 by Jean Christophe Rusatira, Ernest Asiedu, Michael Saunders, and Dulani Christian, the business is certified under Maryland’s Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) Program and sources its coffee directly from small farms in Rwanda, offering small-batch roasts alongside pastries and light fare. Committed to ethical trade and community impact, Matriarch Coffee donates 10% of its profits to women-focused programs in coffee farming communities — having subsidized livestock and health insurance coverage for hundreds of farmers in Rwanda in 2022 and 2023 alone.
