Founded in 2014 by James and Amanda Defrees, 517 Coffee Company is a local, family-owned specialty coffee roasting company and café located at 6030 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd in Lansing, Michigan. The company began by selling craft-roasted coffees at farmers markets before expanding into its first brick-and-mortar shop in 2021, and has since grown to include a roastery and bar inside the historic Potter’s Mill building in Lansing’s Baker-Donora neighborhood. With a commitment to pushing Lansing’s coffee culture forward, 517 Coffee offers handcrafted drinks, house-made syrups, and directly sourced beans from producers in Brazil, Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, and Colombia, while also fostering community through initiatives like a pay-what-you-can drip coffee station and organizing citywide coffee tours with fellow local cafés.
