About

The Door Coffeehouse is a nonprofit located in the heart of Laporte, Minnesota, operating out of a beautifully restored 1906 home — believed to be the oldest residence in town — that doubles as a community coffee shop called “Level Ground” and an upstairs emergency shelter for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Founded by Joyce and Kevin Day, the business has operated at full capacity since opening in 2020, with the coffee shop serving as a funding source for the shelter while also exclusively featuring Heroes Rise Coffee, a portion of whose proceeds supports local fire and police departments. In addition to providing short-term lodging, clothing, food, and assistance with rental deposits and documents, The Door has expanded its mission by purchasing the former Laporte town hall to develop additional family housing units, and was recognized as the recipient of Beltrami Electric Cooperative’s 2024 Touchstone Energy Community Award.
